I have yet to get my hands on Mitch Horowitz’s Occult America because my library’s funding has been cut drastically, and the esoteric are the first to be ignored.  Fortunately I did get a chance to hear Mitch speak on Jay-Z and the Occult via NPR which proved to be quite interesting.  There’s been a lot of attention lately to Jay-Z’s supposed connection to the Occult and Freemasonry, and I have to say it makes life much more interesting.  It also explains a lot to me – he’s obviously put me under a spell because I’ve never liked his music very much but the Blueprint 3 is great.  For the record, I’m A Tribe Called Quest kind of girl.

So why the pictures of Rihanna? Because I LOVE her style and oh yeah, you can see a scary face  in her back in that last photo.  Remember when she wasn’t cool and singing songs like SOS?  She has come a long way since playing at the Los Angeles County Fair.  For reals.  I’d have to say her “good girl gone bad” look has put her on my best dressed list of 2009.  What a difference the Occult can make.

Las VEGAS

Las Vegas was an absolute blast. There was not enough time in the day for us to do everything we wanted to. It was difficult going through the hundreds of photos I took and figuring out which ones I wanted to share on the blog. The first is yet another addition to my ever growing collection of “me wearing hats” photos. Since I refuse to succumb to my strange affection for fur and actually buy it, I always gush over fur hats when I spot one. What can I say? I absolutely won’t buy it but I love playing in it. It is sick, I know.

The second photo was from a restaurant we passed in Caesar’s Palace. Wow, right? Lastly, I must discuss the greatness of Hoover Dam. This image was found in the women’s restroom and I couldn’t stop taking photos of it. So much of Hoover damn appears to have Occult influences and you haven’t visited I suggest you do. Art deco astrology signs, planets, and figures line the damn and it was truly a sight to see. There was even a tape playing over a load speaker that said the designer constructed his designs to impress “future civilizations”, er, rt Deco X Barneys New York X Caesar’s Palace X Hoover Damaliens.

P.S. I am wearing lipstick in the above photo. I sat at the Las Vegas Barneys counter one night and just had at it. More on the color and product to come. I love it.

Inspired by ANGER

Film is a medium that has always inspired my sense of style.  For this reason, I am so excited for this weekend’s screening of The Films of Kenneth Anger at Cinespia.  Even better is that he is going to be there in person.  I was devastated when I missed him at the Hammer’s “Occult Month” so here’s my chance to redeem myself.  Maybe he’ll even induct me into the O.T.O.

These are some of Anger’s images that I found particularly inspiring while digging around for some clips.  I think I might have spotted that sequence coat at Balmain and that cage on Lady Gaga recently.  Maybe I’ll see you there this Sunday?  Here’s some info to further entice you:

Beautiful, erotic, phantasmagoric, the films of Kenneth Anger are a national treasure. Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Marianne Faithfull, Anton Lavey, and a  parade of other 60s luminaries collaborate on this collection of short films . They range from rich mystcal imagery and visual essays of psychedelic color to insider documentary footage of bikers and a glittering love letter to early black and white film. Please join us under the stars for this very special screening with one of our most legendary filmmakers.

Cinespia should have included the word occult somewhere in that description but I’ll let it slide.  Erotic? Satanic? Under the stars in a cemetary? You can count me in!
