LIPSTICK QUEEN

September 23, 2009

LIPSTICKQUEENSHADES

I mentioned on Monday that I hit the makeup counter at Barneys while in Las Vegas. It was Wednesday night (they close at 11p) and I wanted a new shade for our night on the town. Boy did we have a night on the town but that is too x-rated to mention right now. Back to the lipstick. I cozied up to the Lipstick Queen counter and the girls encouraged me to have at it. I tried on many different shades and I was immediately drawn to the wines and purples.

I’ve been wanting to incorporate a more severe lip color – I’ve only worn a pinkish nude – and since I’ll never go near red it was clear in which direction I was heading. I first tried the Saint Wine and was quite pleased, but then I added a top coat of the Chinatown Glossy Pencil in the “Mystery” color and I knew I found the perfect combination. I was such an exciting moment for a girl who was always weary of lipstick.

P.S. Lipstick Queen lipsticks are not tested on animals, are gluten-free and do not use any harsh ingredients.

Shown here: Wine Saint ($18.00), Chinatown Glossy Pencil “Mystery” ($20.00)

Las VEGAS

Las Vegas was an absolute blast. There was not enough time in the day for us to do everything we wanted to. It was difficult going through the hundreds of photos I took and figuring out which ones I wanted to share on the blog. The first is yet another addition to my ever growing collection of “me wearing hats” photos. Since I refuse to succumb to my strange affection for fur and actually buy it, I always gush over fur hats when I spot one. What can I say? I absolutely won’t buy it but I love playing in it. It is sick, I know.

The second photo was from a restaurant we passed in Caesar’s Palace. Wow, right? Lastly, I must discuss the greatness of Hoover Dam. This image was found in the women’s restroom and I couldn’t stop taking photos of it. So much of Hoover damn appears to have Occult influences and you haven’t visited I suggest you do. Art deco astrology signs, planets, and figures line the damn and it was truly a sight to see. There was even a tape playing over a load speaker that said the designer constructed his designs to impress “future civilizations”, er, rt Deco X Barneys New York X Caesar’s Palace X Hoover Damaliens.

P.S. I am wearing lipstick in the above photo. I sat at the Las Vegas Barneys counter one night and just had at it. More on the color and product to come. I love it.

Best dressed men in Las Vegas. Love them!

This past weekend I hosted my sister’s bachelorette party in Las Vegas.  We arrived Thursday night and the fun did not stop until we left on Sunday afternoon.  We stayed at the Venetian and I recommend it to those looking to visit Las Vegas as the hotel was simply perfect.  The hotel’s spa was absolutely amazing, so if you’re looking for a good massage and pure bliss, that is your place.

Las Vegas is not a city I visit often, but I am so glad I threw the party there as it makes getting wild quite easy.  There was plenty of XXX fun, but I still managed to visit the new Barneys, hit the best boutiques and indulge in the most delicious food.  Buchon anyone?

Here are just a few of the many photos I snapped while living it up in Sin City.  Two more after the break.

Pending Purchase / Vena Cava

September 25, 2008

This past weekend I ventured over to the Americana in Glendale to use my birthday gift certificate at Barneys Co-Op.  I had my eye on a ruffled 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt, and since that store is always empty and I have never seen anyone buy anything in there, I knew my skirt would be patiently waiting for me.  WRONG.

Everything else was still in its place, but my skirt disappeared.  It’s now off their website too!  Luckily, the VENA CAVA rack satiated my fashion desires.  Their purple tired petal dress was to D-I-E for, and when I received my Barneys catalog in the mail yesterday I was reminded how much I want it.  I can’t imagine it flying off the shelf at the Americana, so should I wait?  Or might I face another fashion disappearance?

Gossip Girl Returns to the City

September 9, 2008

Fashion Intel here,

This week we were seeing red and bold prints as Gossip Girl was bidding adieu to summer and saying hello to the city.  We did not see as many wardrobe changes as we would’ve liked, but what we did catch surely did not disappoint.  Sweaters for Squash [Chuck].  Slips on the beach [Serena]. Neon abound. [Vanessa]  Here are our top moments from last night’s show.

  1. Blair in culottes. Hmmm…we’re going to have to think about that.
  2. All is well, Blair has changed into our favorite Marc by Marc Jacobs Alessandra Sleeveless Silk Dress!
  3. Vanessa – Alexis Bittar much?  It’s fine, you should see our collection.
  4. “Bromance”
  5. We FINALLY get to see inside Serena’s closet.  I spy a BARNEYS hanger!
  6. It wouldn’t be an episode if we didn’t see Chuck in a preppy knit sweater.
  7. AND if we didn’t see Blair sporting a bow of sorts.
  8. Santo Gold is a good choice to add to our fashion soundtrack.  +1 Gossip Girl music editor
  9. Jenny, you look so grown up with all that lipstick.
  10. Welcome home Upper Eastsiders.  Get ready for Fall Fashion!

From L to R: Forever 21 Satin Rose Headband ($4.80), Marc by Marc Jacobs Alessandra Sleeveless Silk Dress ($150), Marc by Marc Jacobs Concrete Jungle Print Dress ($460), American Apparel Afrika Printed Cotton Legging ($34) and Afrika Printed Cotton Spandex JerseyToo-Short Tube Dress ($29), Alexis Bittar Horseshoe Necklace ($115)

In the Mail / The Row, Leather Leggings

September 4, 2008

What better way to calm my stress of summer school midterms, ailments, and daily life than to receive a lovely email from Barneys urging me to get my very own pair of LEATHER LEGGINGS. Not but a few hours ago the beating sun was extracting perspiration through my white American Apparel v-neck, but the truth is I always dream of fashion through the eyes of Fall colors and fabrics.

Leggings, as those closest to me know, make me vomit in my own mouth. Much to my surprise I squealed with joy when I saw this image of Coco Rocha wearing leather, clutching Goyard, donning leopard on the skull, in front of a scene of white monochromatic books. Did someone peer into my mind last night while I was sleeping? This is my winning combination. This will be my look for Fall. Now if I can only get a hand on $1,700 so that I can help fill the pockets of those struggling artists Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen. What can I say, I love The Row and those stylish girls.

FYI: The Row’s studio is down the street from my apartment. I’ll be keeping my eye out for any “sample sales.” In my dreams.

In the MAIL: My Pounding Heart, Crangi

July 7, 2008

Philip Crangi + his anvil = my true love.

I have shown some love for jeweler-du-jour Philip Crangi in the past here on Fashion INTEL, and my heart melted knowing that I would be thousands of miles away from his in-store appearance at Barneys New York (Madison Avenue) this week. To all my NYC fashionistas and jewelry aficionados, please stop by 7.09 from 6-8pm and tell dear Phil how handsome I think he is!

Me aside, simply stop by to have your monogram personally stamped on a bangle by Crangi himself. Read more about this special event over on Simon Doonan’s Barneys Babble.

Right on Target

June 18, 2008

The fashion intelligentsia loves good design under $50, though you often find us swooning over $1500 Balenciaga bags at Barneys – that bag will be mine! We always wait with anticipation to hear who’s next for Go International (Upcoming is Richard Chai), and we are happy that during the designer interim we are given another option, something better than anything else you can find on the Target racks.

Here are our picks for the next GO INTERNATIONAL capsule. We are absolutely drooling over that Tiered Ruffle Dress in Floral Print ($39.99), and wouldn’t mind adding the Multi-Layer Ruffle Skirt in Black with White Trim ($29.99) and the Button-Front Ruffle Dress in Navy ($29.99) to our closet.

See more looks at the TARGET press room.

Organics to Go

Stella

This Memorial Day weekend gave me some time to clean out my closet, but most importantly time to relax. Of course I had the opportunity to watch the flat screen, and I managed to catch a movie on HBO entitled I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. No doubt this movie left me in an awful depression, but the next day I had some more time to reflect and came up with even more options to make my life more animal and Earth friendly.

Eco-Chic is not merely a trend to the fashion intelligentsia, but a necessity in living the most sustainable life possible.  I had a fabulous course at U.C.L.A. called “Gender and the Environment” and it absolutely blew my mind on how to live.  Since then, our home has become a chic recycling center, our food is always organic/local free of GMOS, our designer duds are given to local thrift shops, and don’t even get me started on my magazine carousel!  BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ANIMALS?  This film tapped into information I had already gathered as a member of Amnesty International and a former vegetarian, but it left me feeling like I had to do more.  Watch, and you’ll undoubtedly feel the same.

Of course when I am sustainable, I ensure that I remain fashionable.  With this in mind, I have vowed to forever support the glorious luxury goods given to us by Stella McCartney.  Even if my $500 Raffia sandals from Spring 07 have fallen apart under minimal wear, I trudge forward because the truth is Stella is unbelievably cool.  I can forget my tattered soles because I still love Stella the fragrance, her line for Adidas, and am a recent convert to her skin care line (thanks for the samples Barneys!)  Up next, the yoga mat, which I’ll be carrying all around downtown.

What will you do to make a difference?

From Top L to R: Adidas by Stella McCartney Yoga Mat $85, Stella McCartney Days-of-the-Week Panties $195.00, Stella Parfum Spray $86, Stella McCartney Hannah Flat $495.00, Stella Care 5 Benefits Moisturizing Cream $76

Seeing Pink (matte)

April 21, 2008

Lipstick

If you are anything like me, you find lipstick either intimidating or gross. Your mind races, constantly thinking you will look like a clown or a prostitute if you dare put color on your lips. It doesn’t help when the girls at the makeup counter confirm this appearance either, does it? Don’t even get me started on those MAC girls!

When images of Spring 08 makeup hit the glossies I couldn’t help admire the soft style of pink and matte lips. For the first time I was lipstick inspired, but figuring out how to trash my fear was difficult. Not only did I want my makeup to be en vogue, but I wanted a color I could always count on. However was I going to get past this mauqillage disastre? In comes product extraordinaire Stefani Greenwood. She gave me a brief consulting, genuinely listening to my cries and within days delivered information that would end up being life changing.

There we were, Barneys New York, and it is the moment of lipstick truth. Stefani and I walk over to the Lipstick Queen counter and are greeted by a sweet, but poorly dressed girl wearing pumpkin read lipstick. Hideux! We try to ignore these off puts and peer onto the lovely displays of color. The countress senses my hesitation but leaps at a suggestion anyway, one that Stefani agrees on. Before you know it, countress is leaning towards my mouth with a brush and voila! To comfort me she says it is more like a gloss than lipstick, but because it is matte it maintains the same effect. I wipe the sweat off my brow and skip away to decide if this is the right choice for me. After looking around and not finding any Phillip Lim to my liking, I catch myself in the mirror and approve of what I see. We shuffle downstairs where I make my first ever lipstick purchase. Don’t worry, I will still keep my Kiehl’s French Rose Gloss in reaching distance.

Here are some tips that I would like to share for lipstick wearers out there, for you are the reason girls like me are frightened:
1. Never have lipstick on your teeth. Simply take a look in the mirror or use that finger in mouth trick!
2. If you are pale, and your name is not Dita Von Teese, please lay off the red!
3. Purple? Enough said. Dump it.
4. Don’t have a lip? Calling Gwen Stefani – work with it, don’t create a new one.
5. Consult magazines, fashion sites like mine, or an attractive girl at a counter for lipstick advise

Rogan for Target at Barneys! Oh my!

April 16, 2008

RoganThe fashion intelligentsia cannot believe they are posting back to back Target stories, but as you know there is no shortage of fashion news.

We were overjoyed when we first heard the announcement of Rogan as the next Go International designer.  We were shocked when we read reports that Barneys wanted to carry the collection in support of of their dear friend Rogan.  That’s right, you will now be shopping for Target clothes at Barneys.  Interesting side note – when my boyfriend and I waited to get our hands on Kate Moss for Topshop, he made a prediction that one day we’d be buying Target from this store.  Psychic?

Barneys will be carrying the collection for a mere 5 days, so if you want to the preview the merchandise, it will arrive in New York and Los Angeles on May 8 and 15.  For those of you who have to wait, don’t worry, we’ll let you know how it is.  With photos of course.

Simon Says

Simon Says

If you love fashion, books about fashion, or stores like Barneys, which has the best fashion, then you probably adore Simon Doonan. I first fell in love with Simon and his fabulousness when I received an uncorrected proof of Wacky Chicks. He had another book before that called Confessions of a Window Dresser but I hadn’t known that at the time. W.C. was one of the most fun and inspiring books I had ever read; I am happy to say it catapulted many things for me. I have been waiting for something to remotely touch W.C’s glory and I think I might have found that in Eccentric Glamour. How do I know this? Because I read in excerpt in this months’ Elle, and it was nothing short of fabulous.

If you want a tiny taste of what the book is like, I will post the article and then you too can have a rattle trying to identify if you are a gypsy. existentialist (me), or socialite.

Meet SIMON at Barneys!
