I bought my tickets in the presale yesterday – center orchestra, wow – but you can buy your’s today starting at 10 AM.

Gaga on the tour’s fashion direction: “The fashion, certainly, is going to be another exploration and another level from where we were with the Fame Ball. The theme of monsters is certainly going to be an influence, as well as the theme of evolution and change. It’s going to be a truly artistic experience that is going to take the form of the greatest post-apocalyptic house party that you’ve ever been to.”

I have yet to get my hands on Mitch Horowitz’s Occult America because my library’s funding has been cut drastically, and the esoteric are the first to be ignored.  Fortunately I did get a chance to hear Mitch speak on Jay-Z and the Occult via NPR which proved to be quite interesting.  There’s been a lot of attention lately to Jay-Z’s supposed connection to the Occult and Freemasonry, and I have to say it makes life much more interesting.  It also explains a lot to me – he’s obviously put me under a spell because I’ve never liked his music very much but the Blueprint 3 is great.  For the record, I’m A Tribe Called Quest kind of girl.

So why the pictures of Rihanna? Because I LOVE her style and oh yeah, you can see a scary face  in her back in that last photo.  Remember when she wasn’t cool and singing songs like SOS?  She has come a long way since playing at the Los Angeles County Fair.  For reals.  I’d have to say her “good girl gone bad” look has put her on my best dressed list of 2009.  What a difference the Occult can make.

Learn more about Jay-Z, Rihanna, and the Occult here (NPR).

Ethnic WHAT?

June 25, 2009

Photo via

In truth, Gaga’s attractive, slightly off-kilter features – ethnic nose, prominent front teeth – seem almost infinitely mutable: One day she looks like Debbie Harry, the next, Donatella Versace.” Rolling Stone Issue #1080

Ethnic. Tribal. Words used to classify the “Other.”  Not familiar with “Othering”, please read up on it here, here, and over on Racialicious.  This quote from Rolling Stone really struck a nerve and I find it crucial to address as I constantly see people, fashion, and food described as either ethnic or tribal.  Lady Gaga is one of my favorite women right now and I find her incredibly talented and sexy.  So what about this “ethnic nose”?  Rolling Stone apparently thinks this is the most appropriate way to describe a woman who doesn’t meet the Euro-centric facial features criteria.  Obviously they haven’t looked at a map lately, so I’d like to remind them that “ethnic” people make up more than half of the world’s population.  Why is it that we are then called the “other” and exotified?

I live for fashion as you know, but I cringe every time I read lines like this: Teen Vogue’s “…Explore new horizons in layered–on ethnic prints”, or Who What Wear Daily’s “Trend Report: Tribal Punk.”  And who could forget American Apparel’s “Afrika” print?  When I see these words being used I cannot help but think of bell hook’s Eating the Other.  I had an amazing course at UCLA entitled Special Topics in Women’s Studies: Femininities: Queering, Countering, Racializing taught by Stacy Macias in which I read this by the aforementioned author.

“Within commodity culture, ethnicity becomes spice, seasoning that can liven up the dull dish that is mainstream white culture.

Currently, the commodification of difference promotes paradigms of consumption wherein whatever difference the Other inhabits is eradicated, via exchange, by a consumer cannibalism that not only displaces the Other but denies significance of that Other’s history through a process of decontextualization.” bell hooks, Eating the Other: Desire and Resistance

Post-modern cultural studies/feminist theory.  Applicable to fashion?  You bet.  I’d really love to hear from one of my favorite bloggers – Mimi of Thread Bared – and from all of you.  Lets start a discourse.

Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs looks so amazing in July’s music issue of Elle Magazine.  I’ve always loved her and the bad.  Her performances on stage are probably the best I’ve ever seen.

Loved this fur coat

Phuong + My boyfriend in Kim’s Hut

These girls were super cool in their shoes

Saturday night we made plans to stop by the always fresh Space 15 Twenty to visit Kim Gordon’s (Sonic Youth) pop-up shop.  My dear friend over at Fixed Air is the events curator at that amazing space and one of the most stylish women I know.  I look forward to many more evenings partying it up with my girl Tania.  Openings are more that just drinks and music to me though, I am always genuinely interested in the collaborations, clothes and space.  This is event did not disappoint as I got to meet Kim, peruse her great collection, and get friendly with Arden Wohl.  Go visit Space 15 Twenty and pick up your Kim Gordon tote!  Throw some heels in there while you are at it.

Vivian GIRLS

April 10, 2009

I’ve seen these girls around but when I read about them in the new Lula magazine I was inspired to finally give them a listen.  I am thrilled that cool girls are still making music that I can dance to.

Please listen to Vivian Girls.

8 Stories Above L.A.

March 20, 2009

Thanks to my friend David for inviting us to his place for his monthly 8 Stories Above L.A. music showcase.  We brought a nice spread of grapes, wine, goat cheese, crackers and sparkling apple cider.  I wish I had taken photos of the people who were sprawled on the floor listening to the lovely rhythms but I didn’t want to break the vibe.

I couldn’t pass up posting this photo of Phuong and the giraffe. Also, how amazing is that light fixture? It has inspired me. Doesn’t David live in an amazing building?

You’ve probably never heard me say this & never will again – there is a God!  No Doubt announced they’re going on tour in 2009 and will be working on a new album.  The secret is out of the bag, I love No Doubt.  I also love Gwen Stefani, even though she needs to work on her race politics [read Salon article].

Love this new photo of the band.  Time to remember all my Jr. High No Doubt memories and sigh – ND, here i come!

The Real Janelle

November 7, 2008

This has to be on the most stylish videos I have seen in a long time.

Mystery Girl

October 10, 2008

Rachel Yamagata who? I don’t know, but she looks cool.

Last night my favorite TV personality Rachel Maddow was on a late-night talk show, with a musical guest named Rachel Yamagata.  I had no idea who she was, but I loved her look.  Loved the bangs, loved the dress.

I like The Like

October 6, 2008

I like THE LIKE, but I cannot decide what I like most, their music or great style.  Either way, I wanted to let you know they are going on a mini tour.  They are touring with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band so I am not sure you’ll be seeing me at the shows, as I rather see them play a whole set.  Their ensembles never dissapoint, so check them out even if it is only for fashion inspiration.

Check tour dates over on The Like’s myspace page, here.  P.S. Tennessee [middle] has a new boyfriend named Mark Ronson.

Facist Baby

Last night I was fortunate to see one of my favorite groups of all time, GOLDFRAPP.  Listening to the angelic Alison Goldfrapp, there was no other place I wanted to be than simply in the prescence of this voice.  Her yodels actually brought me to tears.

Her ensemble did not disappoint, nor does it ever, and for that reason I wanted to post an image of the jester inspired Alison.  This is not a comment on a trend nor a shout out to Miu Miu Spring 08, as Alison has been sporting circus inspired sounds and looks since 1999.  Do yourself a favor and buy Felt Mountain today!

Fashion Phony

September 8, 2008

“Well…I been [sic]…usually when I didn’t have any money, which I don’t really have a lot yet, I used to shop at thrift stores and vintage stores. And this is all from a vintage store.  I found this at a costume house and decided to put it together.  And this is not really a pin for my hair.  It is supposed to be a pin for my outfit but I just stuck a couple bobby pins in it.  I don’t know, I am just one of those, like, just do it yourself, cut it, make it and hopefully it will be great.” [Katy Perry on the VMA red carpet]

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, er, KATY PERRY is as articulate as her fashion and lyrics are authentic.  I dare say she is the Avril Lavigne of 2008.  Fake lesbian kisses?  Thrift store shopping?  Edgy? I can spot a tool from a mile away.  AND if I read one more article regarding her resemblance to Zooey Deschanel, I am going to kill myself.

Alexander Wang Gets Foxy

September 6, 2008

The Fashion Intel will always have a soft spot for Foxy Brown, the rap spitting gem who brought us the greatness of Ill Na Na. I’ve loved her through her toughest times, wished her well when she went deaf, and it makes me happy to read that one of my favorite designers, Alexander Wang, loves her too.

In fact, he adores her so much, she’ll be sitting front row at this show [fashion week] and performing at his after-party. is reporting that Foxy Brown will be “performing a couple classic tracks circa 10:30 p.m., and given that word comes from Mr. Wang himself, it stands to be good.”

Girl on Film: Zooey Deschanel

Zooey + fashion + music = best summer ever!

Listen Up!

July 9, 2008

If you are anything like me, you still love many of things you did as a teenager. Sometimes many of those things such as Dr. Martens’ creepers or Screeching Weasel reveal themselves as ridiculous with a little age, but if you are lucky you can still count on some of your former interests to remain in tact.

The Gossip is one of those groups that no matter how huge they become (in the UK, wake up America!), they will always remain awesomely hip. Not simply because they have a fearless and sexy lead singer, but they make fun music. I’ve loved them since I was 18, and years later my adoration has only grown.

I was enthralled to see Beth Ditto in the music issue of NYLON magazine, no less rocking the Christian Louboutin Roditas in yellow. She’s been in Paris Vogue, Vogue, Pop magazine, and it is great that her style is still being recognized, as she is a gem among plastics. I wasn’t a fan of these particular Louboutins, as they looked too similar to something found in a Spearmint Rhino dressing room, but Ditto is making them look hot. For $500 they can be yours too.

Not familiar with the sounds of the GOSSIP?  Listen to our online mixtape, courtesy of muxtape.  More photos after the break

FASHION Playlist, Courtesy of Fashion INTEL

July 3, 2008

As teens, music was as important to us as fashion. These days we might not be frequenting The Smell, The Troubador, or El Rey as much as we would like, but we still love listening to past favorites and finding new gems.

With that in mind, we present to you Fashion INTEL’S mixed tape. We’re the kind of music snobs that don’t find “mixed tape” appropriate for labeling CDs or mp3s, but in this case we’ll excuse the muxtape, because we had so much fun making it!

Click the tape and see our fashion playlist for the month of JULY. We’d love to listen to yours, so comment with your playlists please!
