There’s more to the GOLD

Weeks ago the fashion industry and bloggers alike flipped for Givenchy’s couture collection.  Seriously, I don’t think I’ve seen so many people simultaneously blog about how amazing something was unless you count the recent freak out over those ACNE shoes.  Oh yeah, you know the ones.

These images have really stuck with me so I decided to do some investigative research at the library to see where Riccardo Tisci possibly drew from.  Though the clothes are obviously not inspired by India it is hard to deny that the gold hardware isn’t.  Thanks to a very cool librarian named Olivian, I got to check out some large reserved books on the subject of jewelry from all over the world.  One was entitled Ethnic Jewelry [cringe, insert “ethnic” discourse here] and the one that was truly remarkable was entitled Indian Jewelry.

The above jewelry collage features Nineteenth/early Twentieth century pieces which are now housed in the National Museum in New Delhi.

BOY + Marisa + Polaroids = PERFECTION

Don’t you love it when I designers/artists take the things you love and make something even more amazing out of it?  Like BOY by Band of Outsiders + Marisa Tomei + the Chateau Marmont + Polaroid films.

I totally fell for Marisa Tomei when she played Maggie on A Different World – best college show ever.  Then she made Untamed Heart and I knew I’d be a fan for eternity.  Even when she gave my boyfriend googly eyes at Joan’s on Third I was totally thrilled because that meant we had similar taste in men and gourmet food!

I welcome you to the first installment of “chain mail” – Fashion Intel’s must have jewelry for the week.  Though I cannot certainly buy everything I post, it is my desire to drool over the best baubles I spot on my favorite webstores and share them with you.

Maybe you love exactly what I love?  Gold. Abrasive. Gaudy. Heavy metals.

Sea of JEWELS

If you have read this blog before, you know how much I love jewelry, especially if it is gold or black or better yet, a combination of the two.  Thank you CREATIVE CONTRAST for adding 3 new “must have” pieces to my long list of jewelry desires.  The first amazing octopus ring I saw was at Barneys and then it appeared on Sea of Shoes and I died!  Thankfully Kenneth Jay Lane designed one I can afford and $600 less than the aforementioned.  I cannot forget to mention one of my favorites Alexis Bittar and since I lost my favorite/only AB ring I have been in the market for a new one.  Did someone say bangle? Yes, please

1. Kenneth Jay Lane Gold and Pave Crystals Octopus Ring ($135)
2. Alexis Bittar Large Smoky Quartz Baguette Ring in Gold ($219)
3.
CC Skye Black Gold Soho Enamel Bangle Bracelet ($119)

A MUST

skeletalbrace

I need this bracelet ASAP.  Saw it today on Refinery 29 and gasped in awe.  Where can I get it?  Better yet, when will YOU buy it for me?

I dissected the pages of Amica and have come up with a solid answer.  Thank goodness I can read Italian [so-so]: Collana Anatmoica d’oro giallo , argento e smalto, Delfina Delettrez.  That’s right, Delfina of Fendi fame is responsible for the skeletal bracelet I am dying over.  Pun intended.  Her website is not functional but try the link anyways.

Mi Vida LOCA

Mi Vida Loca finally made it to number 1 in my Netflix queue and I finally got to watch the film from start to finish – it’s only taken me 15 years!  I really wanted to see it when it first came out, but seeing that I was 10 years old, my parents didn’t find it appropriate.  There was something that always drew me to the film and that was the fashion.  And that it was written and directed by a woman.  Even as a young girl those details were important to me.

Back to the film’s fashion.  Chola culture and style has always impressed me.  Long before Gwen Stefani hijacked the look, there were chicanas all over Los Angeles rocking half shirts, white cotton tees, gaudy gold necklaces, and black, black and more black.  Can you say Alexander Wang?  Here some of the best screen caps accompanied with Alexander Wang’s Spring lookbook.  The colors and the feel made me think of so much what is coming out now.  Everything pictured from the film could be replicated via American Apparel [pink dress] , Erin Wasson x RVCA [tight black skirt] and Alexander Wang [stretch lace dress].  I recommend that you try and hit up your local thrift store for that 90’s fashion that has quickly squeezed itself back into our lives.

Too HOT

It was so hot in L.A. today!  Luckily for me, UCLA is just minutes away from Santa Monica and the ocean breeze can be quite refreshing.  After class I had no desire to go back home to 101 degree weather.   Boyfriend and I hopped in the car and drove to the beach.  I’d been wanting to do some thrifting in Santa Monica and I am so glad I did because I picked up these OZBEK pants!  [Bio & style.com]  Even though it is too incredibly hot to wear them, they surely have a place on my clothing rack.

After acquiring some thrift goodies we were famished and drove over to Real Food Daily.  Not only is that one of my favorite eateries, but it is the place my boyfriend and I ate the day that marks our anniversary.  Five years.  Then off to Wasteland we went, where I discovered two amazing dresses.  Moschino & Vena Cava, but both size 0.  Hilarious – I don’t even think I know a size 0 – those girls just haven’t made it into my circle yet.  Nonetheless, they were being sold for amazing prices and in great condition.  I took these photos so you could all sigh with me.  Lastly, I have found my summer sandal.  Thank you Jeffrey Campbell.  You can usually find me in heels but I truly needed a flat for the many adventures I am planning for this summer.  I cannot wait.

Rachel Roy for Macys? According to WWD, Rachel Roy will launch a new line called Rachel Rachel Roy to be sold exclusively at Macy’s.  Her clothes will hit stores this August and if anything is like that black dress with gold studs, you can count me in!  Rachel says of this new endeavor, “This line is the younger sister to the Rachel Roy collection. It has the same designer sensibility but with a younger feeling.”  Oh yeah, they’re going to launch a Facebook page too.

I have always been a fan of Rachel Roy, so much that I was the creator of her wikipedia page.  Ask my workmates, they will confirm it!

Funny Girl

My favorite quality in any person is their sense of humor.  If you can make me laugh we’re friends for life.  Anna Faris is one of those people who can make me pee my pants laughing.  She makes some of the worst movies but she always manages to make me chortle.  I’ll excuse her bad roles as I am well aware there are very few decent roles written for women in Hollywood and she’s not an “A-lister” yet.

Thank you Elle magazine for recognizing how awesome Anna Faris.  See her beautiful shots after the break.

My friend sent me a link to these amazing shoes designed by Omelle (ähm’ elle), which consists of a team of two young ladies named Cherise Angelle and Nicole LaFave.  This friend mentioned that these girls were great students of a professor we know at FIDM and that I’d love their shoes.  She was right!  They are so beautiful and look so well crafted.  Adding to the excitement is the beautiful bow bag they send you with every order.

Creature of Comfort

March 11, 2009

fi031209

Comfort is not a word often associated with fashion.  I cannot tell you how many times someone has asked me “are your shoes comfortable” or has said “your jacket sure has a lot of buckles.”  Wedges and offensive metals are simply my style and I feel comfortable in my various looks.  But when I get home it is off with my these clothes and into my workout/lounging attire.  This  look always consists of an American Apparel tri-blend v-neck and some black stretchy pants – best running outfit I swear!

I mention these dichotomous looks because I have found a designer who has managed to marry style with absolute comfort.  The truth is I’ve known about Rebecca Turbow for nine years but  I haven’t mentioned her on Fashion Intel because I didn’t realize she branched out from turquoise! During my stint in New York, this sweet young lady lived in my neighborhood and I always used to see her running around in nothing but her cool turquoise duds.  Unfortunately for me I am not such a turquoise wearer but now that she has introduced gray I am totally on board!  Check out these great images from her Spring 09 campaign and this cute high waisted knife pleated skirt [$35].

Fashion Doppelgänger / Louboutin v F21

November 21, 2008

fi1121081

I haven’t posted a Fashion Doppelgänger in awhile, so I was thrilled to come across these beauts!  Though a much more “popular” site recently used the phrase “Fashiongänger” and more than once had the same knock-offs feature a day after mine, I am happy to bring you my most recent discovery – Christian Louboutin v Forever 21.

We all know that Forever 21 is the biggest knock-off offender of all, but at a time like this I am a bit offended by the $835 Louboutins that look like something the strippers over at Sam’s Hofbrau would wear.  There have been many wannabees to the Rodita Zip Platforms but I can say I am a little impressed by the $27.80 red [though appears coral] Zipper Chic Pumps from Forever 21.  They don’t look nearly as stripper-esque!

Alexander the Great

Last night marked the fifth annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund dinner in which Alexander Wang was chosen the worthy recipient. He’ll take home not only top honors, but pocket change worth $200,000 and a year’s worth of mentoring.

Coming in runner up were Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai of Vena Cava, who the Fashion Intel has exclaimed their undying love to.  Plus, they’re from my ‘hood in the SGV.  They’ll take home $50,000.

It seems like us Californians have the perfect touch! From San Francisco to South Pasadena, this year our designers have ruled fashion. [Read more on designers who are California Natives here, & more on CFDA at WWD]

All Wang garments pictured can be found over at La Garçonne [a favorite of mine!]

Slow & Steady…

October 29, 2008

Last week I was shocked when fashionista.com called out Slow & Steady Wins the Race under their regular “Adventures in Copyright” blog.  Anyone in the art community knows about this label and I thought fashionistas did as well. I’ve always admired S&S products at MOCA, which I live down the street from, and I know they’re carried in some of the most unique boutiques across the country.

Just the other week I met with Slow & Steady over at the Copper building in downtown L.A. [that is where I got this postcard]. I had a meeting with an Alexis Bittar rep for our shop and thought I’d stop by some other booths as well.  S&S had some of the best merchandise by far – they have just introduced some water-proof heels which are absolutely amazing!  Even though I wasn’t in the market to place an order, I am happy knowing that my friend’s shop will be carrying their line any day now.

That great shop is GOLDEN AGE, owned by my dear friends Martine & Marco.  Check out their amazing collection of art work, music and zines. And in not too long, Slow & Steady Wins the Race.

Win the Gold

October 27, 2008

It is no secret to those that know me that I absolutely love jewelry, especially if it is gaudy gold.  Think Rachel Zoe.  One of my favorite designers is Alexis Bittar, who not only has some of the best crafted lucite but has a fascinating history of collecting and selling vintage jewelry as a young man.  That’s right, Alexis is a man.

I was excited to hear that Alexis Bittar has released jewelry under the title “From the Archive” which encompasses  many of his most stand out pieces over the past few years.  My favorite piece are the earrings pictured above which have been re-released in a white.  If you are a true collector check out the rest over at AlexisBittar.com

Trick or Treat

October 27, 2008

Halloween is my favorite holiday, so every day this week I’ll bring you something spooky, witchy, or ghostly.  If it is black, ripped or webbed you bet it will be on my radar until the 31st and probably there on after, because that is simply my style.  I love the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte and am dying to know what they’ll be doing this Halloween.

What are you going to be for Halloween?
