INTOLERABLE CRUELTY

Los Angeles County homeless population has reached 90,000 – the largest group of homeless people in the United States. The bulk of the L.A. county homeless, 82,291 out of the 90,000, are found in South Central (which includes Watts, Downtown, Pico Union, Boyle Heights, and Hollywood).

I think W Magazine forgot to mention a few things in their Paper Bag Princess fashion spread so I thought I’d include some numbers that represent my city and homelessness. I cannot get these images out of my head and I could no longer avoid posting them. One of my favorite blogs, Thread Bared, has plenty to expound on these photos as well as the re-emergence of “tramp chic” and I strongly recommend you read their critique.

I’m currently working with a friend on educating our community about the severity of homelessness, especially heightened during the downward spiral of this economy. We’re working on a project that I’ll be promoting through this blog and I look forward to sharing it with you. I know you’ll want to be involved.

Save $$$, GO THRIFTING!

I don’t know about you, but I’m watching what I spend my money on.   I’m so glad my birthday just passed because I was showered with lovely things I simply cannot buy myself at the moment.  I’m trying to save money and it is hard because it is not like I have that much. Even more grim is our economy and the unemployment rate, particularly in California.  I swear that every friend I have is looking for a job, worried about their  job security, trying to find a place to live or merely watching every dollar that comes out of their wallet.  I am certainly not exempt from this and I’m guessing you’re probably not either.  That’s why I think it is important we get extremely creative with the money we do have.

Thank goodness I was taught by my grandmother at a very young age about the magic of thrift stores.  Even better is when you have best friends who also love to thrift!  This past weekend – birthday weekend – Phuong and I visited our local Salvation Army in the ‘bra.  Unfortunately they were not having their buy 1 get one 1 free, but I still think we made out like bandits.

Phuong found a colorful floral silk suit which you can see it only took her a day to alter and make amazing.  As for me, I added another pair of baggy silk pants to my ever growing collection.  You can never go wrong with 100% silk.  I’m really obsessing over the comfort of silk pants right now – I wish I could wear them every day and I’m the person who never wore pants! Ever.

Do yourself a favor and visit your local thrift store.  You can also give back and donate some of your old wares.  Tax right off? Yes!

Sigh.  What to say when you see images that can be interpreted as culturally insensitive but still absolutely love the beauty found in them.  I came across these while looking for some stimuli.

I am currently working on my inspiration board for Fashion Intel while simultaneously re-designing the site with some friends.  Wanted: more images of Indian jewelry, the occult, gold, s+m, Dia de los Muertos, Santa Muerte, Anger stills, geodes, Gorgoroth, zodiac symbols, on and on.  These are interests of mine that I have seen pop up all over the place as trends and quite frankly I am baffled. OK, I exaggerated, we all know that some things on that list will never be trends, hopefully.

I read a lot of fashion blogs. I mean A LOT.  And I love them.  But who knew everyone would be dressed like they had a closet full of black metal records or that they wanted to be chocked with a rubber ball gag.  Who knew?

FIREADERCONTEST

For those who have read Fashion Intel you know how much I love Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.  I equally adore their clothing lines The Row and Elizabeth and James.  As much as I thrift and hit up my favorite boutiques, I also enjoy shopping online and being inspired by how much great fashion I can find on the web.  One of my favorite online shops is Chick Downtown and we’ve partnered up for the very first Fashion Intel giveaway!  Needless to say I am excited to see which one of you wins the amazing Elizabeth and James Grey Deconstructed Tee! [top left, retails $90]

I suggest you check out some of the other designers on Chick Downtown, like my favorites Alexis Bittar, Balmain, and House of Harlow.  They’ve also got some bohemian scarves from Sir Alistair Rai.    For those of you who love twitter as much as I do, stay up-to-date with Chick Downtown’s twitter page and follow them on Facebook.  You’re following me too, right?

I loathe it when people ask “are you a shoe or bag person?”  Not just because the question has been asked 1 zillion times, but because the questioner always fails to throw jewelry into that cliched ultimatum.  My answer would be jewelry in case you were asking.

These are two necklaces that I acquired these past two weeks.  One is vintage and from Reno, the other from Forever 21.  I’ll let you guess which is which.  Upon spotting them I was whisked away to Dries Van Noten land and there was no turning back.  They reminded me of that amazing gold cluster necklace I recently saw on the runway that turned my knees into butter.  Nowhere near identical but definitely in the same family.

I promised lots of people that I’d start posting some more of my style on Fashion Intel.  Maybe it will help you get better acquainted with who I am?  You’ll definitely be seeing lots of

1  jewelry 2 black 3 gold 4 s+m shoes 5 vintage

You won’t be seeing the following

1 80s fashion 2 “it items” 3 frowns 4 bad model poses 5 cliches/platitudes

Thanks for reading.  Have a lovely weekend.

This cat photo is for Stefani Greenwood.  I was going to post it on your birthday, but now it is my thank you for being such a great friend.

To my readers, there won’t be much posting this week as my grandmother passed away on Monday.  Needless to say I am very sad, and also exhausted from crying.  Just wanted to let you know why I haven’t posted and you will hear from me real soon.
